Setup

3 players start mid court playing offence. The start by attacking one basket where 2 players play defense. 2 players stand on each sideline (at about the extend free throw line).

How it works

  1. 1The 3-on-2 Attack: The three offensive players push the ball up the floor against the two waiting defenders at the opposite basket. One player handles the middle lane while the other two sprint wide down the wings.
  2. 2Read the Defense: The ball handler reads the front defender, draws the defense, and makes a quick pass to an open teammate for a clean shot or layup (typically in three passes or fewer).
  3. 3Rebound & Outlet: Once a shot is taken, all players scramble for the rebound. The player who secures the rebound or gains possession immediately throws an outlet pass to the nearest sideline wing.
  4. 4Push the Other Way: The rebounder fills the middle lane and the two sideline wings sprint wide to form a brand-new 3-on-2 break heading straight back in the opposite direction.
  5. 5Rotation: Two of the players from the previous offensive group stay at that end to become the new 2-man defense, while the third peels off to a sideline outlet position. The cycle repeats continuously from end to end.

Coaching points

  • ✔Pace & Conditioning: Run the drill in a fixed time block (usually 4 to 6 minutes) or play to a target number of completed fast-break scores.
  • ✔No Walking: Enforce an immediate outlet pass—players cannot slow down or walk the ball up the court.
  • ✔Scoring System (Optional): Award points for made baskets, assists, defensive stops, or hustle rebounds, and subtract points for bad passes or turnovers.
